| Editorial Reviews:
Modern choral music for amateur singers may be America's biggest musical underground. That's the only explanation of why Grammy-nominated composer Morten Lauridsen can claim that his works are some of the most often-performed new pieces in years, although few among the East Coast intelligentsia have ever heard of him. Like the similarly popular John Rutter, Lauridsen inhabits an extremely conservative style directed simply and single-mindedly at showing off the beauty of choral singing while it illustrates inspiring texts. Unlike many of his fellow neo-Romantic conservatives, Lauridsen displays a brand of conservatism that is completely convincing and sincere. His music also has range, from the spellbindingly rapturous Lux aeterna to his playful settings of Rilke's poems about the beauty and thorniness of roses in Les chansons des roses. There is, moreover, a Coplandesque streak heard in his Mid-Winter Songs, which are settings of poems by Robert Graves. Though the Los Angeles Master Chorale has a suitably red-blooded sound, the music would be better served with more precise diction. --David Patrick Stearns

TELL OTHERS February 7, 2010 Sharon K. Byers (St Louis, MO,USA) I just ordered still another copy of this CD (not into the i-pod generation). It needs to be shared with any true musician you know, who may well miss it otherwise. I am an organist who accompanied the first performance of this in the St. Louis area, last year, and the more we worked with it the more I truly loved it. The penultimate movement is a "Hallelujah! Chorus" for the 20th century.
Lots a Lux February 3, 2010 Wendy (CT, USA) I originally heard the piece "Oh Magnum Mysterium" performed live and thought it was so beautiful that I wanted to own a recorded version. I looked over many reviews of recorded performances and ordered this one based on those reviews. I'm not disappointed and feel it is a good collection of Lauridsen's work (though I'm no expert). It was recorded in 1998 and so, to me, the fidelity isn't superb but, overall, I am very pleased with the CD. My only disappointment is that the CD's jewel case arrived chipped at the corner - when the case is opened, the cover disconnects from the bottom half. There was a fair amount of room inside the shipping box it was packed within and it contained only a few air pillows, so perhaps the break occurred in transit. Or..perhaps it was damaged before it was shipped - hard to know. This happened to another disk shipped to me in the past via Amazon. I didn't bother to return either of them because the disks played fine - too much time and trouble to return.
SUBLIME AND/OR IN YOUR FACE January 19, 2010 DAVID HALL (USA) Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna has passages on some of the selections of this c.d. that are absolutely sublime. But, unfortunately they are often preceded or followed by an overwhelming volume of the soprano voices that, for me, shatters the heavenly ambiance I wish were the through-line of this album, and that is attained in some of the moments, as I have mentioned. I've purchased this album twice. Returned it twice. Both times, after realizing I rarely listened to it. I am a Lauridsen fan though - and I ordered from Amazon another c.d. of Lauridsen's music which I've just received. Its LAURIDSEN: CHORAL WORKS, performed by the Elora Festival Singers, conducted by Noel Edison. This one I love. Its a keeper. It has the beauty that I loved so much in some of the moments of Lauridsen's Lux Aterna - but on this c.d. that beauty is sustained, from the beginning to the end of each selection on the album.
OMG! November 14, 2009 Scott Hepper 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just received this Requiem from Amazon-Oh My God! A truly brilliant deeply moving masterpiece....it scours and penetrates your soul! This "Brahams/Rutter" Style masterpiece literally brought me to tears. I repeat...deeply moving, as it still resonates with me months after I first heard it. The perfect pitch Choir has personified a god-like perfection in this world premiere recording and is offset with HUGE rich cellos and double bases.
-If Lux Aeterna does not profoundly move you in any way...you have forever lost your soul.
But THIS NOW and add it to your "masters" collection. IT IS A MUST. I promise!! Thank you Amazon and Pandora Radio as it was just a recommended selection on my computer-now it is a part of my life.

Breathtakingly beautiful sound, excellent musical performance by LAMC July 6, 2009 Hippo 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've heard other recordings of Lux Aeterna. Nothing comes close to the resonant, rich sound of this LAMC recording. For those who complain that the lyrics are not that articulate: i) It's Latin; very few people really understand it these days and 2) That's what the little booklet in the CD is for!
The other cycles have a very different character but are still gorgeous. The Rose cycle is poetic, like Rilke's poems, and Mid-Winter Songs is haunting, dissonant and creates vivid images of the starkness of winter. The gem of the disc is O Magnum Mysterium. It moves me to tears and gives me goosebumps almost every time I hear it.
Lauridsen's music is tonal and "audience friendly", so buy this disc even if you are Bach/Beethoven fan but are suspicious of modern composers. Unlike several modern composers, listening to Lauridsen is not "work", and does not require intellectual involvement (though there is plenty for you to find if you actually enjoy that sort of thing).
Overall, this CD is a must buy for all choir music enthusiasts as well as classical music lovers.
