| Customer Reviews: Pleasant February 28, 2009 David Saemann This CD is somewhat of a mixed bag. In the first two Hungarian Rhapsodies of Liszt, Ormandy's orchestra plays very well, but the interpretations are somewhat stiff and unimaginative. One need only hear Bernstein's recording of No. 4 to hear some of the spirit that is missing. The performances of the Enesco Rhapsodies fare rather better. These are pieces that tend to play themselves if they are effectively conducted, and Ormandy's performances are comparable to the great interprtations by Antal Dorati. It is worth noting that Ormandy's recordings of Liszt and Enesco were made in 1957-8, and feature sound that is somewhat drier than the other recordings on this CD, although they are certainly clear and relatively full sounding. The sound in both the Alfven and the Chabrier is excellent, and Ormandy's performances here are excellent, beyond cavil. In fact, I doubt I've ever heard a better performance of Espana. So, although this CD has some limitations, at its best it is very good indeed.
Very Pleasant Anthology January 3, 2004 J H Murphy (Agoura, California USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Reasonably priced, well recorded (in particular considering the age of some of the performances), well performed old standbys. I assume most readers have heard the rhapsodies by Liszt, Enescu, and Chabrier, as I had. The Alfvén Swedish Rhapsody was new to me, but not disappointing.I usually listen to these at work with a company-issue PC, so you may find flaws with a high-end audio system which I've missed. I was surprised to find that five of the seven pieces were recorded between 1957 and 1959 by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadephia Orchestra at the Broadwood Hotel. The Chabrier is the only Town Hall piece. Overall, a reasonable value and a pleasant companion for 75 minutes.
Some lovely rhapsodies! March 1, 2000 Russel E. Higgins 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This album contains some very lively rhapsodies which are a joy to listen to. The two most famous --- the Swedish Rhapsody by Alfven and the Hungarian Rhapsody #2 by Liszt --- are given virtuoso performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy when they were playing beautifully. I am particularly impressed by the Alfven rhapsody. It is a joy to hear; Ormandy has always shaped the music very well, and he is at his best here. The Enescu Romanian Rhapsodies are a bit more pedanticly written, and tend to be a bit monotonous and predictable upon repeated hearing. There is also a Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody on the CD with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Bernstein, so you can easily compare the two conductors and orchestras at about the same recording dates. I believe most music lovers will enjoy these pressings. They are well recorded and have been edited well for CD.
